UN ANTIC LAQUERED FORNITURE
The lacquered wardrobe
Many trends in interior decorating come and go, but some have endured throughout the centuries. Laquered furniture is a venerable art and still today has a place in the finest homes where beautiful pieces of furniture bring together tradition and modern taste.
The art of laquering furniture is one of the most important aspects of antique Italian furniture after the 17th century.
However, it did not originate in italy; it was brought over from the Far East by merchants traveling the Silk Road and Catholic missionaries who spoke with admiration of the beautiful furniture of the East.
The Italian art of laquering was thus born from the first pieces of furniture seen or imported from the Orient. In fact, early examples created in this country were very similiar to Oriental pieces (and were called cineserie, an inexact term used to describe this art form) and only later evolved into an autonomous typical style.
